A Practical Two Day Leadership Masterclass for Managers
The 2015 Succeeding in Leadership Conference teams a line-up of Australia’s most successful leaders with the elite Senior Faculty of the Australian School of Applied Management (ASAM) to deliver a practical and insightful learning experience.
Over two intensive days attendees will gain rare insights to the real life leadership challenges encountered in diverse fields including business, sport, government, media and NFP. Moreover speakers will outline the methods and approaches that they have employed to generate team cohesion and focus to achieve extraordinary outcomes.
Through a process of facilitated discussion and presentations ASAM Senior Faculty will highlight the key leadership behaviours required to successfully navigate the myriad situational and cultural challenges experienced in all work settings.
Succeeding in Leadership offers a unique opportunity to unlock the collective knowledge of Australia’s most celebrated leaders and leadership experts.
The Conference program has been designed to leverage each presenter’s specific areas of experience through a practical examination of their own real life leadership issues and challenges.
Focusing on key behaviours and actions of effective leadership the program will include keynote presentations, Q&A’s and development sessions.
At short intervals throughout the conference, attendees will be invited to reflect on presentations in the context of their own work situation to underpin/ensure the practicality of learnings.
Attendees will receive a Program Workbook that features resources and readings that are referenced throughout the conference in addition to receiving a post Conference Wrap-Up document that will endure as an invaluable desktop resource.

David Parkin OAM,
Former AFL Coach
David Parkin’s accomplishments as a football player and coach are outstanding. They include captaining the Hawthorn Football Club to their second premiership in 1971, and then coaching them to a flag in 1978. He later coached Carlton Football Club to successive Premierships in 1981-82, as well as taking them to a record breaking number of victories in 1995, which culminated with them becoming Premiers. David’s professional experience includes President of the Australian Football Coaches Association (1994-2002); Executive Officer Australian Football Coaches Association (1989-90); Director of Football, Hawthorn Football Club (2001–2002) and President, Australian Football Coaches Association (Victorian Branch).

Michael Phelan APM,
Deputy Commissioner National Security, Australian Federal Police
Deputy Commissioner Michael Phelan was appointed to the Australian Federal Police in 1985 and during his career has worked in a variety of fields, including community policing, narcotics and serious fraud. On the 17 November 2014, Mr Phelan commenced the role of Deputy Commissioner National Security where he is responsible for Counter-Terrorism Operations, Protection Services, Aviation and the AFP’s International Deployment Group. Mr Phelan is currently a member of the Australian National Advisory Council on Alcohol and Drugs and has previously held positions on the Boards of the Australian Crime Commission, Crimtrac and the Australian and New Zealand Police Advisory Agency.
The Hon. Nicola Roxon,
Former Attorney-General for Australia
Nicola Roxon became Australia’s first female Attorney-General in 2011, a culmination of a stellar political career and impressive legal background. As a reforming Health Minister, she managed an annual budget of $64 billion and negotiated major reforms to Australia’s public hospital, primary care and preventative health systems. As Attorney-General, Ms Roxon oversaw the courts, Australia’s intelligence agency, the Human Rights Commission and diverse laws stretching from cyber crime to family law. Ms Roxon’s success as a leader, creative policy maker and outstanding achiever has earned her numerous awards, both nationally and internationally.
Jane Halton AO PSM,
Secretary, Department of Finance
Jane Halton is Secretary of the Australian Department of Finance. She is responsible for essential services delivered by Finance including supporting the delivery of the Australian Government Budget, the ongoing management of the Australian Government’s non-defence domestic property portfolio and key asset sales. Jane is co-chair of the OECD Asian Senior Budget Officials, a member of the executive board of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington and on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE). She is also a Public Policy Fellow at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy.
Tim Costello AO
Chief Executive Officer, World Vision Australia
Tim Costello is one of Australia’s most sought after voices on issues of social justice, leadership and ethics. Since 2004 Tim has been CEO of World Vision, Australia’s largest international development agency. Trained in economics, law, education and theology, Tim has practised law, served as a Baptist minister, and has been active in church and community leadership, local government and national affairs.
Major General John Cantwell AO DSC
Speaker, Author and Veteran Leader
John Cantwell is the bestselling author of Exit Wounds. Cantwell served in three distinct wars: combat duty in Operation Desert Storm in 1991; as the Director of Strategic Operations of the Multi National Forces in Iraq in 2006; and as the Commander of Australian Forces in the Middle East in 2010. For his service in the Middle East he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his ‘inspired leadership, deep commitment to his people and superior performance on operations’. Since his retirement Cantwell has lectured on leadership and military affairs to a variety of defence, business and academic audiences.

Kirk is a skilled facilitator, executive coach and thought leader in the fields of leadership, mindfulness and communication. He is committed to helping individuals develop awareness and making wise choices in their working lives. His work has taken him around Australia with companies such as the Royal Australian Navy, BHP, RMIT and the NAB. Kirk has a background in education, management, coaching and facilitation. Early in his career Kirk founded two successful alternative schools. Directing these schools, and working within these communities, he developed a passion and curiosity about how people work, and how organisations become learning organisations.

After successfully navigating her way through a career in IT, Janet ran an organizational change consultancy for 5 years before joining the Australian School of Applied Management. She believes that, through skilled leadership, it is possible to change our work environments so that the increase both employee well-being and business performance. Her style is part coaching, part facilitating, but always challenging and engaging. She believes that growth is best explored through curiosity and openness. Janet has 20 years of business development, and management experience, including 10 years in senior leadership positions.
